HAYLEY NICHOLS

ARTIST BIO

Hayley Nichols is an interdisciplinary artist and designer from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She experiments with ways of performing careful attention, studying the marks, movements, and sounds created through daily rituals. Nichols is preoccupied with the unintended: traces left by unconscious social gestures, slow wear on utilitarian objects, the ephemera of mundane habits. Through drawing, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and sound, she facilitates a subtle noticing of the world. Nichols holds a BFA from Oklahoma State University, where she studied graphic design and studio art. In 2020, she returned to her hometown after a decade living and working in New York.

PROJECT INFO

Sonic Hum was a collaborative art project that explored the act of self-soothing through humming. Participants were invited to record their internal melodies, which were played through a speaker beneath a marbling bath. Sound vibrations agitated the water's surface, creating patterns. These patterns were transferred onto paper, capturing the rhythms in print. The project aimed to merge science and art, translating the emotional resonance into an abstract visualization. Sonic Hum culminated in a participatory event, allowing visitors to record their humming and witness the creation of prints in real time.
