AVERY J. KLEIN
ARTIST BIO
Tulsa native Avery J. Klein is a fine art photographer with over fourteen years of experience in both commercial and editorial work. She built a strong career over six years in Los Angeles, with her photography featured in publications such as Martha Stewart, Dezeen, Refinery29, and Modern Luxury Interiors. She has since returned home to Tulsa to reconnect with family and continue her creative practice. Driven by a deep sense of purpose, she now creates projects that encourage others to record, archive, and preserve their own family histories, sparking meaningful dialogue between generations and honoring the legacies that might otherwise be lost.
ARTIST PROJECT INFO
“The Dead Detective” is an ongoing visual-literary project that blends nineteenth-century photography, genealogical research, and creative storytelling. Through recovered portraiture and historical inquiry, Avery J. Klein works to identify and preserve the lives of those nearly lost to time. Rooted in her own Native (Muscogee Creek) ancestry and her longing for ancestral images, Klein reflects through the project her deep belief in the power of photographs to carry memory, identity, and intergenerational connection. As part of this work, she plans to host workshops that guide others in uncovering and preserving their own family stories, researching ancestors, and building meaningful connections with elders through legacy-based tools.
